This large flow from the source at the East Rift Zone of Kilauea moved at a fast pace for two miles before stalling one half mile above the Royal Gardens Subdivision. The front of this flow is shown bulldozing through a small island of trees that had been spared from previous flows.
Recorded January 11, 2008

does lava go uphill?
contessaoreilly 3 years ago
Nice catch. My "upslope" reference was that the area was uphill from the Royal Gardens subdivision. Lava will always flow downhill when on the surface. It is only when it is under pressure at the source or in lava tubes that internal forces overcome gravity and the flow is generally up until it reaches the surface. Internal flows can also be in other directions, depending on the path of least resistance in the surrounding rock.

geez man mut got really hot when u got that close to lava lol sucks to be those trees :D

You can get a couple of feet from the lava for a about two seconds before the heat makes you run out of the way. The more exposed skin you have, the less time you have to stick around. So the heat actually keeps you safe because you cannot stand it for more than a few seconds.

The lava front has retreated and is now nearer the source. I went up again Jan 16 but I couldn't get close enough to get video because of the terrain. It is still heading in the general direction of Royal Gardens and the end of Highway 130.
