Awake Aortic Valve Replacement.mpg

This patient is undergoing Aortic Valve Replacement under TEA (Thoracic epidural Anaesthesia). We have done almost 560 cardiac cases under thoracic epidural anaesthesia which included all sort of cases, CABG, Valve replacements and congenital heart diseases. The patients included were as young as 15 years upto 83 year old. what was wrong with the valve? appears bicuspid, looks either calcified or infected (endocarditis)...

because this patient was under thoracic epidural anaesthesia (TEA) and not a general anaesthetic he was awake the whole time just heavily sedated and the area of the body the surgery was performed was completely numbed by the epidural so although awake the whole time he could not feel a thing and his eyes opened as they wore the sedation off. hope that answers your question
