autocar seem to have a rare ability of making stuff boring.

It's clearly diesel powered, and given they're fuel limited rather then air limited (in terms of combustion) they gain a lot of power by increasing fuel flow (via injectors etc) and thus blow a LOT more smoke. All diesel race cars do it.

1.4 super/turbo charged motor...only in Europe...quite unique...I love it

A good setup of the car never produces black smoke.
