Paul Morphy is widely considered to be one of the purest chess geniuses in history, with a fabulous ability to attack with combinative wizardry. Bobby Fischer regarded him to be the "most accurate" player in history. The segment covers Morphy's birth in New Orleans, his games as a child prodigy, the Inaugural American Chess Congress of 1857, and his departure for England in 1858.

  • @jessicafischerqueen-Here on YT, if you can handle a German movie without Eng. subs is something you might really like.If you've been bitten by the chess bug it's your kind of candy.Uploaded as "Schachnovelle"(Scacco alla follia)"-1. for part 1. It stars Curt Jurgens and Claire Bloom. B&W 1960's vintage. The world chess champion is aboard ship,a game is arranged, the champion will not even sit at table with opponents...a man who has never played walks over to the board..the champion has a problem!

  • @Flickchaser Thank you- I couldn't understand the German however. But thanks to you I'm buying the story from Amazon.

  • Morphy never attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, which didn't exist at the time. He attended what is now called Tulane University, which was indeed called the University of Louisiana at the time.

  • @nolaJ421 Thanks for providing that valuable historical information- much appreciated by me, and all other Morphy fans.

  • At the five minute mark, is that an actual photo of Morphy?????? If not, do you know where any may be. I would like to know exactly of his appearance. Thank you.

  • @savannahjoel As far as I know it is not a photo of Morphy- or Maurian for that matter. Looks like Morphy though eh? I thought it was him when I found the image.

  • @IlluminatoSavio I'm sorry- I just looked through all my folders and I can't find it. I don't remember the name of it either?

Can anyone help us out? What is the jazz song opening the video?

  • @jessicafischerqueen In my opinion the book "Schachnovelle" by Stefan Zweig is extremely underrated, It's definitely worth learning German ;) (No joke, if you're a reader and have capacity for one more language- it should be German, there's a huge treasure of German literature)

  • it is amazing how many interests the people on this planet have. i find it a bit strange that someone would love chess so much to write someone's biography or read the whole chess history but i guess that is a matter of personal taste in the very end

  • @freezazoid

    17..Qxf3 (the queen sac) 18. gxf3 Rg6+ 19. Kh1 Bh3 20. Rd1 Bg2+ 21. Kg1 Bxf3+ 22. Kf1 Bg2+ 23. Kg1 Bh3+ 24. Kh1 Bxf2 25. Qf1 Bxf1 26. Rxf1 Re2 27. Ra1 Rh6 28. d4 Be3

I hope that helps! I think 22... Rg2 would've been quicker, though. I think rook down to e1 runs into queen takes queen.

  • @freezazoid 8:17 ...queen to F1 I see the problem with that. But rook down to e1 seems to be the answer... why would he move queen to F3?

  • @ 8:17 am I missing something? Either black queen takes rook, or black rook moves down and you have mate. Why move queen to F3? and how does that mate?

  • @jessicafischerqueen No problem. Since I'm from Lafayette (but now reside in New Orleans), a part of me does wish that he had spent some time there. But to this day, they still don't have a law school there. You did a very fine job on this video by the way. Thanks!
