Faux Marble

You will start with a lighter glaze color of 3/4 glaze to 1/4 paint...covering the entire surface so there is a background glaze that has some variety without veining.
After that the process is exactly the same as pressing a sponge on the wall in organic lines/shapes with a glaze mix of 1/2 glaze to 1/2 paint or tint. (makes a deeper/darker glaze mix)

Instead of a sponge dabbing on the wall though, you would use a chip brush held perpendicular to the surface and dab exactly how you see the veining on the video...strait up & down & in randomized 45 degree angles to replicate how veining would look. Then just copy my look on the video (or a picture of marble patterns) in regards to the movement of veins/striations.

It might help to think that this originally was hot lava flowing & moving/mixing with other minerals getting different colors/shapes.combinations, etc. then slowly drying into marble, etc.

Best,
Rik

  • really nice! what was the ratio you use to mix the paint and glaze? and did you just paint over the prime or you used a semigloss for your base coat? before the glazing.

    thank you again.

  • @severino1012 ' Thank you. I use various glaze mixtures depending on how deep/dark I want it...the more glaze the clearer/lighter...but basically 1/2 - 1/2 will work till you get the feel of it. I painted directly on the painted surface which, as I remember, was an egshell finish.

  • The fireplace was probably made of plaster...but that's unknown since it was covered in white paint which was the surface I fauxed over....

  • nice work.. is this stone that is being painted?? if so what kind of paint would you use?

  • @nimabenz

thx nimabenz, No these are mostly all faux-glazes over paint...I did do one on stone and I used UNIVERSAL TINTS I purchased from Home Depot & mixed with an acrylic binder and watered down. It penetrated the stone and appeared to be natural veining. Pictures of that are on my website: go to MURALSFANTASTIC ...click on

FAUX - FIREPLACE TREATMENTS - then click on third pidture

  • Hi j0zone...yes, any type stone is doable...less veining though in slate.
