Hello. I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI headline update on this Wednesday, April 4, 2007.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says he has pardoned the 15 British sailors and marines detained last month and will set them free. That's according to CNN. Admadinejad made the announcement at a news conference where he honored the border guards who captured them. The President honored three of those guards with medals for bravery. In his speech, he said Iran will never allow trespassing of its waters.

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Syria's President today against the wishes of the Bush administration. There are no details about what Pelosi and President Bashar al-Assad talked about. A Syrian government official says it's doubtful that a first meeting of this type reached any expected results. President Bush says Pelosi's visit was sending mixed messages to a state sponsor of terror.

The U.S. Army is preparing for a possible funding shortage. That may happen if President Bush vetoes an emergency war spending bill that calls for an eventual withdrawal of troops from Iraq. But analysts say the Pentagon will be the first to face cuts. The Army Budget Office is warning program managers that the standoff between Bush and Congress over the bill is doubtful to end before April. The office says that means current funds need to be stretched to June.

A new study out says women who eat red meat have an increased risk of breast cancer. The research studied women between the ages of 35 and 69. It found that females who consumed as little as 2 ounces of red beef, lamb or pork a day were 56 percent more likely to have breast cancer. The researchers say factors like weight, smoking, fruit and vegetable intake and hormone replacement therapy were taken into account in the findings.

That's all for now. Check out our new special segment called the "Power of a pet," a story about four-legged friends who play a special role in the recovery of wounded soldiers. Thanks for watching.
