Michigan Militia Field Report Of Pastor Terry Jones Rally - Dearborn, Michigan. April 29, 2011

Members of the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia and the Michigan Militia Corps Wolverines attended a protest and counter protest staged on the lawn of Dearborn city hall. We kept our profile low, as our intention was to support free speech as private citizens, but also be on-hand to render assistance if things turned ugly.
We were dressed in civilian clothes and equipped with concealed sidearms, Cameras, first aid kits, gas masks, FRS radios with earbud mics, and bottles of water. We anticipated having to protect ourselves against teargas and treating people exposed if violence erupted. We also had a licensed and equipped HAM radio operator on-hand to assist in communications.
We staged in a shopping center parking lot just north of the demonstration site. Upon our arrival, There was already a VERY heavy police presence. We were approached by local police who questioned us briefly. When a team leader identified our group, The officer exclaimed "Michigan Militia Dot Com? Oh, You're the good guys." The officer also said she'd radio the other units to identify us and minimize obstruction to our movements,
We were then immediately approached and questioned by several more officers.
We then moved south on Schaeffer Ave to the intersection of Michigan Avenue containing the City Hall. Police and news helicopters circled overhead. At least two observation or sniper teams had "high ground" established n both sides of Michigan Avenue. Local, county, and State police in uniforms and "plain-clothes" were everywhere. Pastor Jones, His supporters, and most of the media were set up on the lawn of City Hall on the south side of the street. Three layers of barricades kept counter-protesters on the north side of the street.
Our unit split into two teams, one on each side, and a few members moved back and forth between the two. Supporters of Jones were outnumbered by around 15 to 1. Supporters quietly listened to Jones while the other side was determined to disrupt the protest. Some held signs with BAMN on them, referring to "By Any Means Necessary" An ultra-left group which has used violence, threats and intimidation to push their own agenda.
Counter-protesters also waved American, Palestinian, and Lebanese flags while supporters waved current and historic US flags, and one Israeli flag. There were no Gadsden flags or "Tea Party" signs on either side.
Some supporters carried signs that read "I will not submit" printed in both English and Arabic. A couple people made a statement by supporting the sign with an extended middle finger pointed toward the counter-protest. The other side held up shoes. A traditional Islamic sign of disrespect.
About an hour into the demonstration, Pastor Jones came off the steps and approached the barricade. He invited the opposition to join him in the Pledge of Allegiance. An uproar started on the north side and the first layer of barricades was toppled as large masses rushed into the street toward Jones.
They threw rocks, shoes, and bottles filled with water, urine, and other unidentified liquids. It seems they merely intended to intimidate Jones and his supporters as the crowd could have easily overrun the police line but held short of direct conflict with supporters or law officers and stopped at the second line of barricades.
Armor-clad riot police quickly arrived on scene , took up position between the second and third row of defense and the other uniformed officers forced the crowd back to the far side of the street. Three people were handcuffed and taken away.
Jones returned to the podium, A couple other speakers gave statements. They then approached the media for Q&A and were then escorted back into city hall and out the back door to Jones' vehicle. I wish I had been able to pay more attention to the speakers, However, the tactical situation held my focus.
A small number of locals tried to move around behind City Hall to confront Jones but were quickly rebuffed by law enforcement. The rest of the masses disappeared quickly and our team hung out and got dinner at a restaurant one block east of the scene.
The FRS radios performed flawlessly for communications and were easily heard above the background noise via earpiece. Cell phones were difficult to hear but still functional.
While Michiganders are traditionally resistant to "outsiders" coming in and telling us what-for... It was important to us for EVERYONE to be allowed to express their political opinions and we were on scene to support the First Amendment much more than either of the parties in this demonstration.
