The massive assault focused on the U.S. Embassy as well as NATO buildings, while at least three suicide bombers were sent elsewhere in the city, Reuters reports

The insurgents used a partially completed building behind the U.S. Embassy to stage the attacks, reports the Los Angeles Times, noting:
"Insurgents appeared to have seized a tall building under construction as a staging ground for the attack with rockets and automatic weapons -- a tactic used previously in similar strikes elsewhere in the country."

Reuters is reporting that at least 9 people have been killed and 23 wounded as a gun battle continued into Tuesday evening.

The attack comes just one day following U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker's claim that the worst problem facing Kabul was "traffic." Last month was the deadliest for U.S. troops in 10 years.
