We stopped at Eucla and then checked out the old Eucla Telegraph Station buried in sand.

  • I visited the Old Telegraph Station ruins about 15 years ago and at that time the mobile dunes had covered everything but the top of a chimney. Nice to see that they were exposed again as recently as 2010.

  • It's near the coast (less than 5 Km,) a desalination plant & port could employ some people. The rabbits destroyed old Eucla when they stripped all the dune vegetation. Eucla is strategically placed where few natural disasters are a threat (very low seismic hazard risk, low tornado risk compared to Oz's main cities, semi protected from cyclones)

The Eyre Highway has the potential to become Australia's own Route 66.

The elevation 93 m (305 ft) would protect it from melting polar icecaps.

  • Cool video. I just did the VIC to WA trip a few weeks ago and I especially liked Eucla. The telegraph station ruins were awesome.
