A lovely ride from the BBC to the QI studios beside the Thames in the company of the spectacularly clever Mr Stephen Fry

  • @carpoolUK You can edit the video description to include a link, but meanwhile 9and in the meantime) we can have an adventure by cutting and pasting charlieissocoollike into youtube's not very good search engine.

  • @lesterclaypool1 Well I think its most important to ensure people that going to elocution lessons and getting rid of your accent or at least making it understandable is not snobbish or disloyal to your roots.

My uncle is a solicitor and had to get rid of his scouse accent as it interfered with his work.I personally love the scouse accent as long as its not on male teenagers. Sounds horrific at that age. But i encourage everyone to attempt to speak well.

Agreed, the smartest cat that I know would need a translator for the "bama (Alabama)impaired in most face to face situations but read this same cat's emails and you'd think that a scholar of some recognition had written them.

I've never understood feeling the need to lose one's accent, though. Then again, I'm not one who has a problem understanding different dialects so maybe there is something to be gained to "dumbing down" a unique one?

  • How I love the British and British TV. Here in America, the public forum is stuffed with people waving and shouting and swearing and feeling pleased with themselves at insulting each other, and getting absolutely nowhere. On British TV the premise of more than one show is entirely based on just having a lovely chat; simply basking in the warm pleasure of good conversation. It actually makes me well up a bit, I am so fucking envious.

  • @lesterclaypool1 Ive always been a big believer in preserving English standards. I think we should take a leaf out of the french book. Certainly considering English is constantly under 'attack' from the states. However it is important to note that this does not mean people wish to destroy regional accents. At least not where I am concerned you can have any accent and still sound academic and or intelligent. You just have to be academic and or intelligent :p

  • @lesterclaypool1

Well my dad has always claimed that the Scouse accent works wonders with women and hes never been to America just the UK and parts of Europe.

Personally I think any strong accent that represents where you are from is alluring. Sadly I don't really have one. just a low deep northern tone but i pronounce words typically in a southern way its weird :p

  • Does anyone know if they're talking about Elijah Wood at first?

  • @MrDeludedPenguin

My wife's best friend's dad worked hard when they got to Canada to lose his Scouse accent but his mum kept her lovely version of the same. My wife never understood why.

Think of it this way, most everywhere else in the world an English accent is considered appealing even if the listener can''t understand all of what's being said. Perhaps the mystery is a part of the appeal?

  • @BlakeRPeters

    Le sigh.

There's always some humourless cunt out to harsh the gig of everyone else, bro.

    Carry on brainsplosioning and enjoy!

  • @Angelamerrill73 he doesn't want to hear you're shit!
