For the last several days 822 and 406 have been running on the Hoosier State in their new heritage paint jobs. Video from April 20, 2011 at REN. The pair of engines should soon be going to Washington DC to join up with Amtrak's 40 Year Anniversary museum train cars.

406 was one of the last EMD engines that Amtrak bought, in 1988. I am told that it has had the EMD main engine taken out, and replaced with a Caterpillar. It can no longer move the train by itself, but it can run the head end power for the cars and the displays. So #822 will be doing the honors in actually providing the traction mobility.

#822 was one of 44 P40's that Amtrak bought in 1993 from General Electric, and based in New Orleans. After serving for ten years until becoming run-out, it went on standby duty in New York for a while. It was retired and stored for about five years, but was brought back as one of 15 that were returned to duty with 2008 George W. Bush economic stimulus funding. The work was completed in 2010 at Beech Grove, and the engine was repainted earlier this year. For about three months it has run around Beech Grove, and made a few trips on the Hoosier. It is the only one of the 15 that has not been out on Amtrak's 21,000 mile western states network. Limited main line duty awaits once the museum train starts its eastern states tour in May and June. After that, who knows, #822 could be coming to a train near you.

  • I am told that 822/406 went east last night on the Capitol, April 27. In between, there were some reports of 822 being on the Illini or Saluki the last several days. 184 is on the Carolinian today. But all of the heritage jobbies are now in the DC area finally.

  • Don't think it has led yet, at least not on the days I have gone out for 'em. It might have some different door panels in the side, but doesn't have the roll up doors that the other "cabbages" have. Also the original "cabbages" were filled with concrete to make up for the loss of weight when the EMD propulsion was taken out.

If indeed a big Cat now prowls inside, it might make up enough weight to hold her down. Maybe there ar some experts that know.

  • 822 was on the Illini service a few days ago

  • @BosworthJ It has a HEP generator like the ones that can be found in the F59PHI's. It is NOT a cabbage, just NPCU with HEP. NPCU does not mean its been cabbaged. Like the ones on amtrak Cascades are NPCU's but not cabbages. The Alaska Railroad has similar units.

  • Cool!

  • 406 is defanently a NPCU-HEP. It says on the 40th anniversary site. Has 406 lead yet?
