really cool video. Been thinking about trying racing, and doesnt look so bad i guess. How much do you guys figure the cat 5 dudes are riding a week during the summer? Definatley not where I feel like doing 2 hour trainer rides just to compete, but would love to get started in it if the entry level isnt insane time commitments.

I just saw this video. How are you doing now? Just my take on this. I started training when I was 18, after swimming and water polo in HS. I entered my 1st race at 21. I was the strongest on a very hilly hard course, but I still didn't know much about pack riding. I learned, like you, and trained hard. After I was an elite Sr 1, I would ride the Sr 3/4 race as a warm up for the Pro/Am race, usually around 100 miles or so. When you ride, ride harder than you would in a race. Motor pacing is best

I just watched a bit further and saw there two guys go. I would have attempted to bridge otherwise your sprinting for 3rd anyway.

I'm suprised at the 04:20 mark that one team had 4 riders in the group. They should have started attacking that group since they had the numbers. Great vid and good racing!

First race? Not bad at all!
The other thing I found curious is that you recognized the sketchy rider (in white) but didn't do anything to change your position relative to him. If you see anything curious (whether it's a sketchy rider, crap pavement, or someone about to attack), always be proactive in getting ready for some action.
(I say these things from watching the vid, but I def. understand talking about it is nothing like being in the race...) Good analysis throughout though.
From a random racer on the east coast, just my $0.02: In the last lap when those two guys attacked late, you started chasing even though you knew their teams wouldn't help. If you've got teammates in the field to work for, that's okay. In this case, riding alone, I'd attack and bridge up to them or at least try. No reason in pulling those guys back with THEIR teammates on your wheel. Either way, you risk blowing your load, but might as well make the other guys chase you, or let you go too.

@sigberto Thanks for the tip. That's the general consensus on what I should have done but oh well. First race so it's all good. I also could have just trained more and gone off the front for the entire race. Maybe next season.

@cougrman210 Thanks guys. I've got a few teams in mind that I'm considering joining so we'll see. It's hard for me to get weekends off so I have held off joining a team since I can't race much. By the way, which one of you guys beat me in the sprint for 3rd yesterday at the crit in Lawrence? That was insanely close!
