Al Jazeera journalist Dorothy Parvaz disappeared six days ago, when she arrived in Syria to cover the protests.

Todd Barker, her fiancé, gave this statement on behalf of her family. Parvaz is an American, Canadian and Iranian citizen.

Syria has confirmed that they have detained Parvaz. Her family and employer demand her release.

A Facebook page campaigning for her release has attracted more than 4,000 fans, while on Twitter many people around the world are using the hastag #FreeDorothy to call for her release.

  • Quit sending women reporters into these places full of wild animals.

  • Todd, stay strong. My thoughts are with you, D and the Parvaz family and I will continue to do everything I can to campaign for her safe return - Natalie

  • Dorothy has been y dear friend for almost 20 years, she is a strong and kind woman dedicated to reporting news from around the world. She has shaped the lives of every one who knows her and is very much loved. Please release Dorothy and allow her to return to her family and friends!

  • Todd, we hear your pain. I implored U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, and Canada's ambassador to the UN, John McNee, by email yesterday, to lobby for Dorothy's release. McNee was Canada's ambassador to Syria in the mid 1990s, and that should be a plus in any Canadian diplomacy on Dorothy's behalf.

The oppressed people of Syria, and Dorothy, are in my prayers.

  • I have a lot of trust in AlJazeera's news stories.

Unlike Fox news or RussiaToday who prefer to take sides, Al Jazeera shows the full picture.

  • Thanks Todd,We hope So..!

  • Free Dorothy! Not only is she a great reporter, but she's a great friend! I know, it's hard to give a shit when it's not someone you know, but as they strike close to home it makes it imperative to wake up and do something. Please, do what you can to pressure Syria to let Dorothy Parvaz go!

  • @millenium2003 pretty crap spy, you idiot. Again. Someone else that needs a hug. Or a life. Confused by which.
