First things first, I have no idea why the audio has been so jittery. Second, that chip you see at the start is the SN76489, which is the chip used in the old Sega Computer systems (SC-1000 line, akin to the Amiga) and cloned for the Sega Master System and Genesis/Mega Drive sound systems. 3 square waves and 1 special noise/tone channel. Image source is http://8bitcollective.com/members/little-scale/
1. Reincarnated Soul from Castlevania: Bloodlines. You might remember hearing the original. :P This isn't on its own because this was a much simpler arrangement and of course uses no FM in it.
2. Super Mario Bros. Underground BGM. Not a lot to this, just me fooling around with Mod2PSG2 one day. After hearing the envelope used in the B part of this song used elsewhere, I decided to look into using it elsewhere; hence the next song uses it.
3. Jewel Man, from Mega Man 9. Uses the noise channel to produce a slightly harsher tone during the first part of the song though it's not super audible in Fusion. Helps make it sound more like the original IMO. I'm actually kinda proud of the arrangement, though I had to revise it when I found a better transcription of the original to get the effects in the last part right.
4. Smash Bros. Brawl Theme Arrangement. Like the SMB music above, me just fooling around with stuff for fun.
5. Greensleeves. Previously released as part of Sonic Retro's special Christmas Chaos album. Did I get a decent synth choir voice out of this one?
6. The Underground Noise. A tribute to the demoscene and Jesper Kyd's Genesis soundtracks in particular, which all had loud, thumping bass and lots of crazy audio effects. This isn't quite as easy on the ears as most of what he made, but I like to think I at least got the HEAVY DEEP BASS down pat.

  • how the hell do you do this o.o

  • A couple trackers. Try a google search for TFM and MOD2PSG2. Between the two of them you could make every song you hear here.

  • Yeah nice one! It's good to hear that 8-bit sound again it reminds me of my childhood. I would love to know why the white noise and the computer bass can't share the same audio space in the music. When the bass comes on the white noise cuts out! And when the white noise comes on the computer bass cuts out! Example at 0:06 to 0:09

  • Well, there's only one channel that can actually do the noise and what you call the "computer bass". Like all the channels it can only play one note at a time, so it's either one or the other.

However I don't recall there being much percussion in the original at that part either, so I wasn't upset about it not being included.

  • I also use those two programs (just found mod2psg2 the other day after looking all over the place for a tracker for sms music). I used TFM to record FM instruments used in my Genesis soundfont.

  • Yeah it seems that you are right! When I say computer bass I mean that farting sound that was used in alot of Matt Furniss SEGA Master System titles like Lemmings,Alien 3,Back To The Future 3,The Terminator,Star Wars and Mortal Kombat II. Those games don't have much white noise in them because of the ''farting computer bass sound.'' I just naturally thought that they were seperate audio lines but they have to share the same line. Once again good job!

  • Nice job on this.
