I made this video for a school assignment when I was 14. I hated "Of Mice and Men" because of the way disabled people and women were treated.

  • I dont think you understand what of mice and men is about. Its a beautiful book about friendship. He didn't want anyone to hurt lenny cause he cared for him so much, even though he always got in trouble. He had him think of the happiest thing he could think about and took his life at that moment. so he didnt get locked up and tortured. I know my best friend would do the same for me if i was in that situation. It shows how humans are so evil but so loving. and friendship is a beautiful thing.

  • I'm not denying that for his time this was an important book. In 2008, there are issues with the idea that a lonely, unhappy young woman deserves to be killed, doesn't deserve to even be given a name.

As for Lenny, this depiction fits really well with eugenics, the popular '30's concept that disabled should be sterilized or murdered. Dressing murder up as a friendship ritual doesn't make it less of a murder.

  • Did you read the book or were you just analyzing for possible offensive content??? It was during the time of a VERY poor economy, it seemed best to marry someone who had money in order to survive in Curley's Wife's situation. Lennie, yeah, he's handicapped, he really has nobody who knows a lot about him, besides, George. It's a product of it's time, and, it's a touching story that just hits you. Maybe you were just finding an excuse to become the next Rev. Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson

  • I read the book and obviously you didn't! Comparing me to Al Sharpton is deeply offensive!

  • And saying that you think the author thought Curley's wife deserved to die because she was sad and lonely is ridiculous. His wife was one of the many victims in this book, but what happened to her was much of her own doing.

Not to be rude, but I don't think you quite understood what the book was about, and what was going on with the characters on an emotional level. I advise you to reread it.

  • Steinbeck does not depict people who are mentally handicapped in this film in a negative manner. Lenny was one of the victims of this story, and although it was sad that George killed him, it was better that way than if Curley had found him first. Thanks to George, Lenny died thinking happy thoughts, and he died without nearly as much pain as it could have been.

  • You have a right to your opinion and im glad you express it. All im trying to say is there is a deep underlying moral. And in the depression they thought you could catch retardation they had no idea what it was. When a book is written for a time you have to keep in mind that time, and don't bring it into modern time. if we did that Darwin's ideas wouldn't be so popular. Cause now we know a cell isn't just a simple thing. it's more complex than he ever imagined.

  • eugenics is still used today. look at planned parenthood, they were founded on a strong belief of eugenics. And still don't think you see the actual story, you have the rose colored blinders on. Just like with mark twain in huck finn. The word nigger was in there so much to take the power from the words. my english teacher had us read the story out loud taking turns at first some people really liked getting away with saying it. But then people got sick of hear seeing and saying the word.

  • Nice work. And interesting approach, to use Steinbeck to express yourself. Congratulations.
