@Deadric101 have a look at monkeyfarms channel, episode title, nice melons. Automated melon farm with a water system that brings it to you. Could use both of these systems together.

This aint automatic, this is semi-automatic. You'll have to hook it up on a BUD on the X-line to be fully automatic, no retilling needed!

Y not use a water current to push the melons to you? Set up in a 7x2 path of melons and have pistons pull them down to harvest relaesing a water current that pushes the melins to u

Lol thats waaay too complex for me. All i have is a stone pressure plate in front of the fence gate wich fires off sitcky pistons under the dirt the melons are on and i collect the melons.
