In January 2008, I directed a musical adaptation of the cult classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Musical" through the ASG group "Not-A-Penny Productions at the university of Arkansas. I aimed to make the the show a tribute to the quirkiness of the movie while also creating a deconstructed musical, making fun of the archetypes found in American musical theater. The show premiered in March to sold out crowds every night and was very well received.

This video is an edit of the first two nights the show was performed, so there may be some odd continuity between shots. For example, Insp. Clay's bald wig will disappear and re-appear a few times (it ripped ten minutes before the show started opening night, so we abandoned it). Then again, this is Ed Wood, so odd continuity shouldn't bee too much of a problem. The show also featured lots of projected video, so I super imposed the projected video on here so you can see it better.

"Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Musical" was originally performed in 2003 at The Box Theater in Fort Worth, TX (http://theboxtheater.com). It was adapted for stage and directed by Michael Johnson. Original music created by Johnathon Brinkley, Damon Gay, and Michael Johnson.

  • yes,as you talk about musical versions...mine has been the first one, since 1982. Check out numbers from it,on youtube....I saw Saucers,Grave Robbers, and Paranoia....when you heard of a musical version, this one,fun though it is,is not it.

  • Yes, I've seen those clips, I really liked them! And that's the beauty of Plan 9: There's no copyright on the film, so anyone can re-imagine it as much as they'd like. I really liked what I saw of the original, but the original musicians of *this* "Plan 9..." and I wanted to take it in a different direction.

Is there any chance the original Plan 9 musical will ever make it to You Tube in its entirety? I'd love to see the whole thing.

  • There's a musical of this film?!

  • There sure is. Tell your friends about it!

  • Fucking Hysterical! Bless you! I needed this!

  • AW DARNIT I wanted to write the musical lol

  • The best part is this was looks like it was done on the same budget as the original.

  • My cousin helped put up lights for a movie Ed Wood made back in the early 70`s and got paid with a 5.00 check.

Theres going to be 2 remakes coming out this year (09) GRAVE ROBBERS FROM OUTER SPACE and PLAN 9 which is a serious version the way Ed meant for it to be and Conrad Brooks will be in it. PLAN 9 will premiere i believe in Sept. i forgot where though but the dvd will come out soon after.

  • Awesome. I wish I could have seen it live. Some really funny stuff. Well done to all! (I've been watching a little at a time since September. What'll I do without it?)

  • i heard about this musical a few years back - so glad to finally see what it's like :)

  • There are apparently at least two musicals based on this film, the other adapted by David G Smith and Mark Knowles, and further adapted for the British stage by Warren Wills and Richard Hanson. Google it!

  • pft..ha ha! horrible movie.
