Released in 1993 on Earache Records.

This is Sleep's 2nd album and last album release as a band. All other releases were released after they broke up. You can thank London Records for that.

The Good : Lot's of good stuff here if your a fan of Black Sabbath. Big thick riffs, lots of low end and heavy ass grooves. The music gets better and better as the volume gets louder. Not the kind of metal to take itself too seriously. Gives potheads one more reason to be potheads. A very influential album from a very influential band. The vocals are gruff, but intelligible. The whole album is consistently heavy and awesome.

The Bad : Not the most original sound out there. Sounds a lot like like Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus and Blue Cheer. If your a fan of speed metal or super technical instrumentation, you might not dig this. The production here is demo level, but not aweful. Just low budget. The marijuana references may turn off some listeners. Lyrics are pretty silly. Could maybe have benefitted from more variety and better production.

In conclusion, I found this album to be very enjoyable. Being stoned is not a pre-requisite to liking Sleep's Holy Mountain. I enjoyed the thick layers of guitar and sound. The vocals went with the music perfectly. When listened to at the proper decibal level, this album has the potential to blow minds.

This album is must for fans of Om, Electric Wizard, Melvins, High On Fire, Bongzilla, Kyuss, Monster Magnet and stoner music in general. People who like their music to be long and slow and thick.

4.5/5

  • @Gagi420

I don't really remember. I've had it for a while. Probably flea market or record store.

  • Good album, but I got to be in the mood for this stuff. Not the biggest fan of sludge metal, but it's pretty good. But the album cover is so awesome.

    And Dopesmoker rules.

  • Yeah, I have to be in the right frame of mind for monumental sludge riffs. This kind of music usually cheers me up when I hear it, though. Doesn't have a downer effect on me.

Gotta love epic albums like Dopesmoker. Every band should try to make an hour long track at some point in their career.
