Young engineers are competing to take part in the 40th Worldskills championships due to take place in Calgary, Canada in 2009. A German championship associated with the AMB, the International Metalworking Trade Fair in Stuttgart, will be held in September 2008.
10,000 students and visitors have been invited to watch apprentices demonstrating their skills in competition. The winners will represent Germany in Calgary. The competition is designed to interest young people in technical careers, present role models and encourage new talent. This is necessary because Germany's craft enterprises are finding it hard to atttract apprentices. There are fewer school leavers and some students leave school with poor qualifications.
