Did you know that Hayao Miyazaki once tried to make an anime adaptation of the classic children's book "Pippi Longstocking"? I only discovered this fact recently and found the artwork online by pure chance. As a fan of both Studio Ghibli and Pippi, I felt compelled to share this discovery with the world. Enjoy!

  • not starting a fight, just sayin i like the other cartoon version a lot better. XD

  • @ImMysteriousIndeed Fair enough, but comparing the two is kinda pointless since that one was actually produced and this wasn't.

  • Your welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed seeing this little slideshow. And I really wish Astrid Lindgren hadn't said no!

  • I'M SWEDISH AND I'M POSITIVE THAT IF THEY WERE TO ASK TODAY THE PERSONS THAT HANDLE THE LEGACY OF ASTRID LINDGREN,( ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY MADE A CRAPPY GERMAN MADE VERSION LET'S ADMIT IT GERMANS CAN'T ANIMATE IF THERE LIVES WHERE ON STAKE.)

    THEY WOULD GET THERE PROMISSION.

  • There's so much heart that went into these preliminary sketches, that it just baffles me as to the narrow-mindedness that would turn down the opportunity of seeing your obscure work transformed into a worldwide phenomena. Before this, (being neither a pedo nor living in Euope) I've never before heard of the name "Pippi Longstocking". I found the name in a forum post, and casually looked it up. If it weren't for the other keyword "Miyazaki", I wouldn't even have clicked on this video!

I am German and couldn't agree more. The German cartoon was horrible and I wish Miyazaki would ask the people who handle the legacy of Mrs. Lindgren again. Those watercolour pictures are just lovely. You know that a Ghibli Pipi movie would be awesome.

  • This needs to happen. that's all i can say right now. seriously.

  • the only thing I could think of was: Oh! come oooon!

Well, Hayao, time to come out of retirement! You still have the ideas and sketches and Pipi longstocking is public domain nowadays! you have nothing to lose! =D

  • the anime that never was, but we have Kiki instead =)

  • Pity this never happened. I wonder why the creator said no

  • well who do you think would be willing to do it from the japanness side? and would it still be good to make or is it to old of an idea?

i dont know if the anime world is still up to the task of haveing a kid'z show where the plot is still as plane as it is they might just turn the tale into a love story like they have been doing for the last lil bit im not dameing the idea im just asking who would be up to the task of doing so and how would the content look with japan'z story telling today?

  • These should be in a museum! I don't know why you wouldn't want your work adapted by Hayao i would be honoured!
