"A National Constitutional Crisis: Arizona's Racial Profiling, Anti-Immigrant Law, SB 1070"
Thomas A. Saenz
A special briefing with Thomas A. Saenz, MALDEF President and General Counsel.
Date: Sunday, July 4, 2010
Time: 10:15 AM
Location: All Saints Church, Pasadena
132 North Euclid Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91101

It's no secret that Latinos and other immigrants across the nation are facing escalating threats to strip them of their civil rights and personal security. Nowhere is this danger more apparent than in Arizona. Nearly two months ago, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law SB 1070, an extreme discriminatory, anti-immigrant law. SB 1070 requires police to demand 'papers' from anyone stopped who fits the profile of someone "unlawfully present" in the United States. Unless suspended, SB 1070 will go into effect on July 29.

  • It is an insult to compare legal black citizens to illegal immigrants! There is a difference and you are likening the Arizona law enforcement to Nazis. Did you know that 1/3 of the Arizona police force is Hispanic? More than HALF of Arizona's police officers are Hispanic. Every state has a constitutional right to defend itself from invaders.

  • @breakthru2dstny You're making up numbers. Hispanics make up 29% of the AZ population, but only 14% of the state Department of Public Safety. If you'd like to investigate the ethnic makeup of each of the local police departments, please go right ahead.

  • @maldef Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu has stated that 1/3 of the police force in Arizona is Hispanic. Also, just some months ago, an Arizona officer was killed by armed illegals and the Arizona officer was Hispanic. There are a lot of Hispanic police officers in Arizona and it is wrong to make it seem like all of them are white. That is not true.

  • @breakthru2dstny As stated before, Hispanics make up only 14% of the state law enforcement agency. I haven't seen numbers for Pinal County, but it's certainly not "half" as you claim. Here's his actual quote:

"BABEU: My staff, which are Hispanic and a third of our population. So clearly, we're going to do so with due regard as protectors of our community."

He was referring to the population of Arizona, not the police force. If you've got the numbers to back it up, post them. If you don't ...

  • This is not an immigration dilemma - it is an illegal immigration dilemma.

  • @breakthru2dstny I hear ya and support what your saying. MALDEF wants illegals to have more rights than American citizens. Just ask the rancher they tried to sue a few years ago. He caught illegals on his property and held them until ICE got there. MALDEF took him to court. Real sad that you cant protect your own property from illegals that destroy and leave trash. MALDEF wants you to sit there and do nothing. Well I will not. It's my right and my property. I am armed and ready.

  • @rejoiceforlife God doesn't hate lies....in fact...he doesn't hate...if he/she was a hater, then we would speaking about the devil here...not about God.

On the other side, i do believe president Obama needs to do something about this issue, and needs to do it now, but he needs support from both sides of the issue and enact a comprehensive immigration reform that will protect american citizens while respecting our Constitution... the supreme law of the land.

    God bless

  • There is no solution to the U.S.-Mexico border problem without including Mexico. Find out about the Megamerge Dissolution Solution, see my profile for url.

  • The fact is that every state has a constitutional right to defend itself from invaders. The federal government is committing treason by suing a state in the union and are violating the constitution article 11. According to federal law, illegal immigrants are required to carry their papers/documents with them at all times and officers are allowed to check immigration status if they have "reasonable suspicion". Is the federal government's immigration law "racial profiling"?

  • @maldef Maybe I made a mistake with the numbers of hispanic officers in Arizona, but that still doesn't mean that all of the officers are white and there are many hispanic officers in Nogales, Arizona that have had to deal with violence spilling across the border from Sonora, Mexico. The majority of the population of Nogales, Arizona is hispanic and now the Mexican mafia/drug cartels violence is affecting them. Should they wait for the federal government to help them?
