Enemies employing C3D2 easily evade UAVs; the human eye plus sensors is the best way to locate and kill/capture those hiding in closed terrain---a lesson we learned with the OV-1 Mohawk that still stands ready to return to U.S. Army active duty to save the day yet again. Details:

  • I used to fly right seat in these fun airplanes. I still have many good memories of them. I can still relive some of that with FSX which has a great OV-1D Mohawk for it. As se posters have stated the Mohawk is no longer flown by the US Army and is only flown in Argintina now. I know this because I helped get some here at Ft Huachuca ready to fly down there. Also the Mohawk was good in it's time but in todays battlefield environment it is obsolete.

  • FALSE. We are converting Beech KingAirs to do the OV-1 Mohawk's job.

  • You know DP, I did a fantasy build of a Convair XFY-1 Pogo as used by the Army in Vietnam as a twin-seat XFY-1G all dark green with 2.75" 8 shot pods on two wings, and 4x.50 on the upper and lower tails.

I bet they would stir up so much dust landing.

with computerized flight controls today, could the tail-sitter turboprop VTOL be practical maybe? Just slide it out from the battle box, and A-frame it up onto its tail.

  • You got the right idea. Add to the computerized flight controls, a seat that ROTATES so the pilot can face best to land the thing in vertical attitude. Think of the DC-X rocket that we should be using to get into space economically if NASA wasn't threatened. The dust problem would be solved by LANDING INTO THE BATTLEBOX.

  • Were there ever any attack variants employed by the US? If so, was it a very effective platform? Anyone, Anyone, Bueller, Anyone?

  • Yes, JOV-1 variant in Vietnam, however all Mohawks were armed despite USAF racketeering pressures for self-defense and attack targets of opportunity; a MIG-17 was shot down by an OV-1

  • I flew the Mohawk..it was indeed the best!

  • I grew up around these planes. My father was a turbine tech then later a hydraulics tech on the OV-1 in the 70s and 80s. It was a usual thing to have one flying overhead as we lived close to the airport where he was working for the 158th aviation regiment/Ga National Guard. Every time I hear the roar of a twin turbo-prop I look up expecting to see a Mohawk.

  • I totally agree. They need to bring this acft and the skyraider back into service. They are both inexpensive to operate, lots of loitering time, and comabt effective.

  • @dynmicpara Scarcely seems like a replacement for the Mohawk.

  • @dynmicpara

It seems silly to do so, when you've got those OV-1's that could be called back to service and they're superior aircraft, at least power wise. I'd hope they aren't asking to King Air's to perform the same Ground attack and CAS roles that the OV-1 could do.

  • so much cooler than those UAV's
