San Diego is an example of a city that has redeveloped its waterfront while still retaining its harbourside rail corridor. Access between the city and the waterfront is provided by level crossings.
This virtual tour around the San Diego waterfront shows you how this city has connected its city and waterfront, while still retaining rail services.
Unfortunately, on the other side of the world in Newcastle, Australia, the old "cut the rail" debate has been reignited by an ultimatum from GPT (General Property Trust) threatening to withdraw from its half a billion dollar CBD retail development unless the rail line is removed (due the heavy rail posing a barrier). The only solution GPT has been able to come up with is the already discredited "rail must go" nonsense.
Where else in the world would you find a city seriously contemplating the removal of it heavy rail right into the CBD, right on the harbour, and only 5 minutes walk from the beach???
The non-profit community group Save Our Rail would like to see the GPT development in Newcastle, but with the heavy rail in place. Their connectivity concerns can be solved by the State Government providing ample level crossings.
San Diego has proved that such a solution can and does work.

i really don't think GPT should cut the rail, it's such a dumb move, like how are they meant to get people into town when they cut the rail? buses? if i was to catcha buse from waratah to town now it takes half an hour, by train it takes ten minutes! the fact that GPT won't listen to any alternative ideas leaves me to believe something is not right.

GPT should look at this video and withdraw its demand to remove the rail from Newcastle.
As the video clearly shows, San Diego -- one of GPT's shining examples or urban renewal -- has the city separated from the waterfront by a rail corridor (just like Newcastle). Safe, wide, pedestrian friendly level crossings are dotted along the waterfront.
THE RAIL LINE IS NO BARRIER TO SAN DIEGO'S SUCCESS!
We need similar crossings in Newcastle to overcome our north-south connection problems.
