Do you remember being young and feeling invincible? When playing in the grass and eating ice cream on a warm summer day was all you needed to feel alive. Where your best friend was whoever sat next to you in class and your crush was the boy you could never have; the same one that pushed you down on the playground and called you names. But you smiled. When youre young, youre always smiling.
Miley couldnt remember much of any of that. It was almost as if one day she was a child and the next she was performing to sold out arenas in towns she had only seen on maps in history class. Hollywood had raised her to be the girl she was now, standing on a stage somewhere in the middle of it all. Just five short months after her release from the hospital, the color had returned to her face, and once again her weight was healthy. In this moment, if only to reassure the curly headed boy sitting in front of her, Miley wore a smile, brighter than any lighting fixture hanging above her head, as she walked toward the podium to accept her award.
She breathed in, sharply, fingering the gold in her palms. With a glance to the ground, and then one out to the crowd, she was ready. Rarely was Miley ever ready, but this was different. Not once before had she ever had a feeling like this. She knew everything she had wanted to say, and how she wanted to execute it. If her words hurt, then so be it. This wouldnt be the first time. "You know, when I made this video, I tried for weeks to think about all of the different ways I could tell my story...our story" She chuckled, correcting her self and causing immediate self-doubt. She gained it all back again as Nicks eyes met her own. She smiled out, fighting the urge to "I think sometimes there isnt a great way to do something. Sometimes things take time and thats kind of what this video was about for me. I ignored the story that I had in my head because that was mine and from there I just kinda kept it simple, you know?" Miley spoke nervously, kicking at the stage with her converse. "I wrote the song for a boy that broke my heart...the same boy that puts it all back together...everyday. But it was never meant to be a hate song. And thats why the video was the way it was. I wish-I wish I could say thank you to everyone that helped with the production of this video. It really means a lot to me. But the only one I have to thank is the boy that inspired it. The same boy that inspires me everyday. I loved you then...I love you now...I love you always." Miley whispered a small Thank you into the microphone before walking backstage with her award. Minutes later, she was escorted back to her seat and seemingly, back into Nicks arms. Immediately, she sat down, her body nestling into Nicks as she rested her head gently on his shoulder. In the dark, Nicks lips found hers, as the two shared a chaste kiss.
Miley used to say that she felt thirteen when she was with Nick but they werent thirteen anymore. Even then there was pain and this was somehow different. The feeling was indescribable; they felt five. In their minds they were on a playground somewhere, pretending to live in a childhood both had no sooner forgotten. They were playing in the grass and eating ice cream. Most importantly, they felt alive again and they were smiling.
