I feel like this is partly true, but the more you think about it, the less true it is. Contrary to what happens in 1984, the USA and NATO do not make it so that people feel the weight of the war, quite the opposite. Authorities try to make the war silent and unnoticed ; the opposite of what Oceania does. But it is right that it itents on cementing society around a fight. But this is not new, communism was the terrorism of the XXth.
