so the DVI only supports up to 1600 x 1200? what adapter should I use if I wanted to hook up a 30 in. monitor w/o a DVI connector on my laptop

It wont take off any load from your graphics card it will still need to do the computations as always. It just gives you an option to plug in more monitors then you would be able with your graphics card outputs (2 or 4 varies from video card, and if you have crossfire or SLI set ups).
