A blog post with photos and a brief description of the visit is available here: http://footprints.warrier.name/visit-to-uss-midway-aircraft-carrier-museum/
A veteran US Navy Aviator gives a walkthrough of launching aircraft off a carrier deck. and landing.
The narrative covers the entire launch and recovery (landing) cycle including preparing the aircraft for launch, the roles played by various teams (red shirts, green shirts, yellow shirts, purple shirts), the actual launch and aircraft recovery (landing).
USS Midway used steam catapults to launch everything from piston engined planes to modern jets. It is now a floating museum in the San Diego harbor in southern California and has an extensive static display of all the
various aircraft that have flown off its deck.
Examples include Skyhawk, Skywarrior, Crusader (featured in this video), Intruder, Hawkeye, Seaking, Huey gunship, F-14 Tomcat and several others.
This was filmed on the deck of USS Midway on Jan 2, 2009.
USS Midway was the first aircraft carrier to be commissioned into the US Navy after the Second World War. After a career spanning almost 48 years, she was decommissioned in 1992. From 2004, she has been functioning as a floating museum at the Sandiego harbor in California.
Other aircraft carriers that use steam catapults include French Navy's Charles De Gaulle and India's INS Vikrant.
What a good explanation of what goes into launching a plane...

Did my share of time in the Navy, was always aware of the precision it took for you guys to work on a carrier deck, but never really understood exactly what went on. THIS, out of all documentaries, movies, etc. was THE most complete explanation of how it's done. Thank you, and now I've got an idea of what I'm seeing. Great Job. Thumbs Up, and Bravo Zulu.
