You need not to lock your elbow (it's not a press) and not to arch anything (it's not a swing). It's an exercise for shoulders, and only for them. You will not develop your core with it as you stated (it's not a bent press). Try doing it with a barbbell for one arm and make a windmill, to develop perfect form
