I'm singing the lyrics as I remember them from a 78 I got at a flea market as a kid. It was sung by John McCormick.

I had to laugh - I have that same 78 and that's how I remember him singing it -almost exagerated

though I am sure he really was Irish

Thanks very much. McCormack (whose name I may be misspelling) was from Ireland. Back in the days before electronic recording, singers were encouraged to enunciate in extreme ways. Once the switch to microphones occurred, a lot of them were out of a job!
