My parents were born in Victorian England. They and all my relatives were Londoners from around Islington. I too was born in North London 75 ago. As a child I remember men and boys in the street whistling and singing this song and other similar ones as they went about their business. Everyone used to sing at least snatches of popular songs although music was not so easily accessible as it is today.

I heard this song from a science documentary "The Story of Science: What Is The World Made Of". I said to myself , I gotta find this song !
It sounds like one of those daffy songs Bugs Bunny would be singing as he's strolling along the woods, minding his own business, at the beginning of a Looney Tunes cartoon...
