*This is the newest version with intro title and credits, submitted to the 2009 Bicycle Film Festival, but unfortunately not selected. I can see how the repetition seems retarded to some, but for those on the other side of the fence, enjoy the journey :)

This is a video time lapse from my 70 day bike ride with Texas 4000 from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska during the summer of 2008. Over 40 cyclists biked in what was the 5th year of the ride, dedicated to raising money for cancer research and awareness while spreading hope, knowledge and charity along the way.

Our team was split up into two routes to maximize the aforementioned three fold mission of the organization. I was on the Coastal route, traveling 4,569.2 miles across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, into Canada, British Columbia, Yukon Territory and into Alaska. I fastened a video camera on a tripod head onto my bike handle bars to capture all the footage in this video. For more information or to donate please visit www.texas4000.org

Music (used with permission) is "Atlas" by the band Battles off their album Mirrors... a song that pumped me up everyday before hitting the road!

  • Epic ride!!! Congrats!

I'm looking to make a time lapse vid (of a much shorter ride) of the Cape Cod Getaway for BikeMS next month. You mind if I ask what software you used and what your end framerate (pre-Youtube-upload) was? I'm trying to balance vid length with viewable framerate. So far, yours seems the smoothest I've seen.

  • @basecode8 I use Final Cut Pro when editing video. All this footage was shot with a miniDV camera so the frame rate should be 29.97. I would recommend looking into the GoPro HD cameras... they're pretty small, mountable to your bike, and shoot beautiful HD footage. Bets of luck on your ride and thanks for watching mine :)

  • How many miles did you average a day? 60-70. Also, I truly think Atlas was a great song to choose for such a video. It goes so well.

  • @sickVoDKa Average was 70-80 miles per day. Thanks for the comment, that song pumped me up every morning for my ride. I like how Lucas Brunelle used it in his new bike film festival trailer... tells me he's seen my video!

  • Thank you to everyone who has watched and commented on the video! This was without one of the most most amazing things I have ever accomplished, so it's great to have this video to look back on.

  • Good choice of music.

I'e always wondered though how does running/biking long distances raise money for cancer/aids/whatever.

Sincere question. I mean is there someone out there who won't write a check unless you do it?

  • Each rider had to raise thousands of dollars through donations, sponsorships and pledges. We collect all these funds before we leave for the ride, so it's kind of expected that you're going to follow through and finish the ride with the team. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you bike riders!!!!!

  • YEA! Fiero @3:22 way to go guys. My goal is from LA to Mexicali

  • I got about two minutes into the video before I accepted that the music wasn't getting any better and put it on mute.

  • Parts of your video brings back great memories. Rode from Seattle to San Francisco along the coast in 2000. We completed our ride on the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge. I recognized Avenue of the Giants, and when you crossed into Oregon. No shoulder to a 3 foot wide shoulder.

Did everyone in your group complete the ride? And how were you able to cope with "life" after the ride? Thanks for the video and stirring up great memories.

  • wow! nice vid

  • I saw the Golden Gate Bridge. cool! How many miles were covered while the camera was on? Knowing that would allow us to compute the average effective speed of the video (distance traveled while camera on / play time of video). How often did you shoot a frame?
