Silverstein was a legit wrestler, having starred at Illinois. Thesz always accorded respect to guys who weren't just "performers," but his autobiography was critical of Silverstein. He said Ruffy believed he was a little better than he really was.

Lou Thesz was said to be the most "protected" pro wrestler for 40 years. I believe, though, he was among a handful of top champions. Only 3 or 4 were better consistently from the 1930's to the 60's...Can anyone guess to whom i am referring? That is, which great pro grapplers were better??

@musicalrich1 Lou was good, but he was nowhere close to being the best.

I wasn't previously familiar with Ruffy, who is extremely impressive. Lou Thesz, though, I knew since the late '60's. He was one of the all-time greats as far as wrestling skill. These guys are great artists as well as great athletes.

My dad met Ruffy years ago, who he admired as well as Lou Thesz. Lou was the best, though, for many years to come. A real "legit" wrestler, Thesz didn't need to rely on "worked" matched to earn a championship. His first title came his way in 1937, at the tender age of 21, i believe. At that time, his opponent stated: Now your troubles have just begun, LOL..., or something like that!
