Would vellum work?

That depends on whether it cracks when folded. If it's heavy vellum, probably it won't be suitable, but thinner vellum could work.

I have some serious issues with tracing paper. I saw insanely complex models on someones flickr that said they are folded from tracing paper. I bought it but i find it too thick, when i want to reverse a fold it often folds somewhere else so i get a new crease instead of following the old one and it also tends to rip in creases that are repeated several times...Are there different types of tracing paper? I totally cant use the one i bought for anything but some simpler tesselations.

Yes, there are different kinds of tracing paper. Some is very thin and folds well, other is heavier and cracks/breaks when folded. Sounds like you tried the second kind.

Just wanted to express my gratitude for your tutorial. It's evident that you went to quite a bit of trouble to show all the steps with the utmost clarity, so thank you very much!!!
