  • For me very suprise thing is that, that a lot of players of this argentinian team (half squad) includes Serrizuela, Dezotti, Simon, Lorenzo, Burruchaga, Calderon, Olarticoechea, Giusti (he retired from international football, i know that) or Monzon never played for Argentina after this World Cup. This is interested for me, because they are good players during the tournament.

  • @KubaKebab: Simon was incredible in Italy 1990. But all those players you mentioned were "Bilardo's guys", and some of them were already in their thirties. Everyone in Argentina wanted completely different national team... an offensive minded team. Basile's teams were all attack.

  • strangest football experience ever: Argentina came to Italy 90 with virtually the same team that awed the world i 1986. Argentina 1990 were SUPERSTARS - and they played shite from start to end. Maradona was mediocre throughout the tournament, except the semifinals against Italy in which he was great and one incredible throughpass to Caniggia against Brazil. Apart from that he did nothing. Goycochea won the silver for them.

  • @HelgeKS: Maradona played lower in the midfield as a playmaker (and not the second striker role that he had in 1986) and made probably 100 perfect passes in the tournament. I think he played very well in Italy 1990, considering he had knee and ankle injuries. He was also the most fouled player of the tournament by a ridiculous margin. This was very defensive minded team with lots of injuries. Biggest disappointment in 1990 was Burruchaga's performance, imho.

  • Argentina had a superstar team in 1994 (Maradona, Redondo, Batistuta, Ruggeri, Caniggia, Balbo, etc. etc.)... they had a superstar team in 1998 and 2002... and delivered nothing. This team had no stars and played defensive, counterattacking football. Just think about last World Cup's finalists... France and Italy... very similar teams. Visually stunning teams (like Brazil 1982 and Argentina 2006) have rarely been successful in the World Cup in the past decades. Unfortunately.

  • Yes, Goyco and Caniggia were stars in this tournament... but before world cup very few people had heard of them. Another unsung hero of this team was Juan Simon who was absolutely superb sweeper throughout the whole competition. Julio Olarticoechea was awesome, rugged leftback as well. This was very, very solid team defensively (although the 1st half against Brazil was really awful LOL).

  • They sould have had a few Kosovar Albanians in the team, they know ho to win.

  • Jebem ti Argentinu. ZIVELA JUGOSLAVIJA !!!

  • wow right, maradonas penalty was utter shit

  • Absolutely incredible penalty shoot out from Argentina point of view. With those missed spot kicks they dug a hole for themselves, but still managed to get through. They were great survivors in this tournament.

  • a kako promasii :D

  • Dragan Stojkovic the best

I look, that Simon played very solid against Yugoslavia in this game (only one bad moment-against Stojkovic, who dribbled him im penalty area and passed to Savicevic) and this is very suprisingly, that he played only 13 MATCHES for argentinian national team.

Very suprisingly Is for me absence of RAMÓN DIAZ in this world cup, too. I heard, that he has conflict with coach Bilardo. That is right? He played in 1990 for Inter and scored a lot of goals in Serie A ...

  • bravo ARGENTINA!!! :)
