A vid for one of the guys on the Peavey forum who was asking about running multi-effects units in the amp's effects loop. This is my "mini-rig" with a Peavey ValveKing head, XXL 2x12 cab, EH Nano Soul Preacher compressor, Boss GE-7 EQ, and an old DOD G7 multi-effects processor. Playing my Ibanez JEM 7DBK for this one. Good times!

A big part of the overall sound is the EQ and compressor pedals in the loop. Also, most of my guitars have Dimarzio pickups in them,(the one I'm playing in this vid has Breed's, specifically). Those things add quite a bit to the quality of the sound. Apart form that, my general settings on channel 2 are: Pres: 5, Res: 7, Treb: 4, Mid 4.5, Bass: 8, Gain: just below 3, and I have the gain boost on. The texture knob on the back is set at one-o-clock,(just over half-way and towards A/B mode).

@AnalogKid1001001 i have a valveking 100 head and cab and a Boss noise surrpressor and when i ran it through my fx loop i lost alot of volume its was like i had no level could it be poor wiring in the head?

Try pulling your threshold back a bit. Start at minimum and work your way up to where you're just starting to get the amount of reduction,(or gating, if you have it set to mute) that you want. If that still drains your volume too much, try adding a pedal with a gain knob after the NS2 for make-up gain. Even something as simple as an EHX LPB-1 will work. It'll basically act as a master volume. continued in next post...

The down-side of the VK is that it doesn't have send and return level controls for the loop. That's a cost-saving measure for Peavey. The loop on the VK is buffered, so anything that affects the volume,(like a noise suppressor or a compressor) stops the amp's volume at a certain point. So, adding an extra gain stage in the loop is the way to make up for that. Bear in mind that you'll be controlling the amp's volume from that stage and it will drive the power tubes a bit more.

@AnalogKid1001001 Could you possibly do a comparison vid for dimarzio vs. seymour duncan or emg? thanks in advance for your response
Kaelan66 2 years ago
I'm very much a Dimarzio kinda guy and I don't have guitars with pickups by the manufacturers you mentioned. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with Duncan's or EMG's, I just prefer Dimarzio's for my tone and style of playing. I'll keep the idea in mind for the future, though, if I ever have the opportunity to do such a video for tonal comparison.
