In the fall of 1944, the First Canadian Army was assigned a daunting task - to clear Hitler's troops from both sides of the Scheldt Estuary between Belgium and Holland. This would allow Allied supply ships to enter the port of Antwerp. For the Canadian volunteers, it was a battle against all odds.

This two-minute vignette is part of The War Amps internationally award-winning Military Heritage Series and reflects the documentary Against All Odds.

  • I notice there is no mention of the amphibious landing carried out by 4 Special Service Brigade (4 Commando Brigade) who were nearly all British Royal Marine Commandos on Walcheren. My Father was a member of 48 RM Commando and was wounded whilst involved in the the fighting. A lot of his friends were killed. It wasn't just a Canadian affair, not to mention the Officers and men of the Royal Navy who also paid the ultimate price in landing both British and Canadians in Operation Infatuate.

  • @tubaman500 The War Amps full length documentary called Against All Odds highlights the amphibious landing by the British at Walcheren. While the 2-minute vignette focuses on the Canadian effort, the documentary pays tribute to the Allies in general as well as to the Belgian and Dutch resistance.

  • My grandpa fought in the Scheldt with the North Shore Regiment. I'm sure he'd have some great stories about it.

  • My great uncle was a member of the Black Watch during this battle. He was wounded, captured, and died on route to a pow camp.

  • My Father was at Walcheren too, with 47 RM Commando, he had his eardrums pierced by advancing to fast and into allied shells, but he came back with a Walther PPK,which luckily had jamed, unlike his Bren !
