This film is implying that Africans (event the ones mixed with Europeans - like the light skin protagonist) aren't good enough to handle modern Western weaponry and are incapable of using it efficiently.
Therefore, they need leave the modern technology to Westerners and go back to "their roots" and only use their own pre-modern technology (even though it's easier to kill the lion with the automatic rifle rather than with a spear).
