In part two of the series, Chris and Billy build a basic Safety Gap. We also get to visit the local Ace Hardware to get materials and Chris gets mistaken for an employee.

  • thank you, I enjoyed the vid. I will be checking out your web site as well.

  • wow

  • i know what the static spark gap is, but what is the purpose of the safety gap? seems to me that if something shorted it would go through the short rather than the gap

  • @kazesamurai1000 You need a capacitor to store the energy from the transformer so that it's easily available when the charge is large enough. This in turn is where the spark gap get to work, as once the stored charge is great enough it will jump the gap and fire up the tesla coil for a split second. This of course happen at a very high rate, making it seem almost like a seemless spark in the gap. What they are building here is a safety gap, like a spark gap but for discharging unwanted currents.

  • i did a double take when you said rylee's ace at the beginning, I used to work there!

  • How big is that toilet flange?

And whats that thing you attached to the bottom of the safety gap that attaches to the NST?
