Amapá has a rich and fascinating culture. The state contains traditional and indigenous populations, which for centuries have lived in harmony with the natural ecosystems, using them for their livelihood, without destroying them. Traditional extractive populations, called caboclos, and quilombolas (communities descending from African slaves) are in great part responsible for conservation of the critical natural resources of the state, as they maintain some of the most important protected areas of Amapá.
