During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer from July 2008-August 2010, I taught secondary school English in the West African nation of Benin. Although the national language in Benin is French, most students are not fluent in the language and speak local languages at home and in the village. In this video, you can see what a typical public school looks like in Benin- cramped, crowded, dirt floors, cement walls, one blackboard.... and me, the teacher. The students did not own books and most only had two notebooks and a pen for school. I loved teaching and I will never forget my students as long as I live!

In this video, I am teaching "Prepositions" to the first-year students. I choose three students to be examples for the lesson, Mouidine, Derou and Dorcasse. As you can see, Dorcasse can barely contain her excitement from shouting out the answer! I ask the students for the words in French and English. This was one of my favorite lessons.
