Part three of this 1950s* film version of Smetana's "Dalibor."

Cast:
Dalibor: Beno Blachut
Milada: Milada Šubrtová
Vladislav II: Václav Bednář
Budivoj: Rudolf Asmus
Beneš the jailor: Zdenĕk Kroupa
Vítek: Ivo Židek
Jitka: Libuše Domanínská
Conductor: Zdeněk Chalabala

EDIT: *Note: The pressing of this that I have was apparently made in 1976, which explains (I hope!) why I had "1970s" in the information above before. Mea culpa. IMdB lists it as being released in 1960, but it was probably made earlier (other sources say 1956). It can be obtained (cheaply, in slightly modified form) here: operapassion.com

From the operapassion copy, I've learned the conductor is actually Zdeněk Chalabala (blame IMdb again :) ). The full cast is listed before this scene in the operapassion version. I've uploaded the new scene as "Dalibor Chalabala 0."

There is another Dalibor DVD available as well, helmed by Krombholc in the 1970s, but I can't in good conscience recommend it. Although it's uncut, the soundtrack and production are very much inferior to this version. Happy watching!

For more information, see the first part of this film.

Libretto:

Vladislav:
Rejoice, Milada! He who harmed you so
is in my hands! God has blessed my armies,
with you and with this land.
Let Dalibor enter. He shall confess!

Milada:
Shall I see him now?
Him, my brother's foe?
My blood is boiling
in my body.

Jitka:
May God protect me
and save my soul!
I can not reveal
the voice of my heart!

Milada:
My blood is boiling
in my body.
Shall I see him now?
My brother's foe, and mine?

Scene 4

Dalibor enters, wearing shackles on his hands, and steps proudly and calmly before the royal throne.

Milada (surprised):
Ah, that's him? I'd never have imagined—

People (among themselves):
Even though his crimes are great,
he faces his fate calmly.

Vladislav:
Give your accusers an answer!
You attacked Ploškovice castle by night,
you destroyed it,
and murdered its lord!
Explain that, if you can, before us now.

Dalibor:
I won't deny it! I do not believe in lies.
I swore deadly vengeance on the man,
and that vengeance,
honor-bound, I fulfilled.
A friend is what I've always wanted,
and I had a friend:
Zdenĕk was his name.
Zdenĕk taught me about music, and when he played
his violin chased all gloom away.
I was transported to that place in heaven
where the stars shine brighter than they do here.
But hear me! For many months I was in conflict
with the council of Litomerice,
and Zdenĕk and I went to fight them often.
Zdenĕk always kept close to me.
But one day, embittered fighting flared up again:
we were separated, and Zdenĕk was captured.
The enemy, with cruel hatred,
cut his head off—
and, to my horror,
they impaled it on a spike!
I had to endure
that horrible sight—
I thought it was a nightmare.
Then no amount of bitter tears
could wash away my pain.

Milada:
That accusation pierces my heart!

Dalibor:
Then I swore vengeance, deadly vengeance!
Ploškovice had helped Litomerice,
so I burnt him out of his castle:
it was a torch for Zdenĕk's tomb!
The lord of the castle has paid: his head for my friend's.

Vladislav:
So you have helped yourself with your crime.

Dalibor:
No man would surrender his right to avenge such wrong!

Vladislav:
You have revolted against the royal throne!

Dalibor:
A blow for a blow! That's the old world's law.
Hear this as well: if by some miracle I keep my head,
I shall make Litomerice pay for Zdenĕk's death!
And if, my King, you try to stand in my way,
you will not safely occupy your throne.

Milada:
What is he saying?

People:
By such words he has condemned himself.

Judges:
You are inviting the harshest punishment!
