Officials say Johnson County Sheriff's deputy Clifton Taylor died from gunshot wounds he suffered while responding to a domestic disturbance at a home just outside of the town of Venus. Eric McClendon, another Johnson County deputy, was injured in the incident but he was treated at a hospital and released.
Taylor, McClendon and a third deputy were assisting Venus Police Department officers at the rural residence in the 2200 block of Eagle Court.
Sheriff Bob Alford released information about the fatal shooting late Saturday night at John Peter Smith Hospital. Alford said when the officers arrived at the home, family members told them the suspect was inside a nearby shed. Alford said the suspect began firing at the officers immediately upon them approaching it.
Sheriff Alford said officers returned fire killing the suspect. The deceased suspect's identity has not been released.
Sheriff Alford said Taylor was struck three times during the gunfire and died of his injuries. Taylor was 31 years old and engaged to be married.
The Texas Rangers are also investigating the shooting.
