@BarryDennen12 (part 2 of 2) This has to be done countless time throughout the film, & varying on complexity of the shot, sometimes on a frame by frame basis. It is so not a gimmick, but an art form.
@BarryDennen12 Please dont contribute to the widespread ignorance of 3D. This video has nothing to do with 3D. They just copied the same video twice & overlapped it.
To convert a movie to 3D, there is no way you can just 'Render' it by hitting a button.Every scene has to be depthmapped by tracing around objects & showing their position in relation to the background, foreground & everything in between. The software then creates a slightly sideways perspective.
I don't see what the drama with 3D is. All Lucas would have to do for the prequels is just hit 'Render' twice, surely.
As for the original films, isn't there a way to use a 3D geometry on the old film to generate a new 3D image? It'd probably take a long-ass time but it's got to look better than the Viewmaster way of doing things ...
The only reason those movies were any good is that he didn't get his way all of the time.

@BarryDennen12 If CG was available in the '70s, do you really think Lucas wouldn't have made wide use of it? This is just misplaced sentimentality.

I'm not talking about this video you numpty. The 'render' bit was a joke because of the obscene amounts of crap CG in the last 3 Star Wars movies.
