Jamaica's new prime minister has said that it is time for her country to cut ties with the British monarchy and declare itself an independent republic.

Speaking at her inaugural address on Friday, Portia Simpson Miller, said her government would "initiate the process of detachment from the monarchy", establishing a republic with a president as head of state, and breaking off links with the former colonial power.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Potter reports.

  • @Alkebulan32 No thanks. We don't want to cut ties.

  • @MrPortfolio101 fuck su'ud there's a reason the capitols ryadh not jeddah(the city area of mecca)

  • I love my country but the on weapons are bullshit. No missile. No automatic gun. No bombs. Sometimes i feel like i was born in the wrong country because i can make all of these..oooooo and we have no jets fighter:(:::

  • @Krunkenator if only would be so easy to get rid of republicans like you out of the UK.

  • So the president is not going to be black? If he was to be indigenous then he would be a red indian

  • @1000gohead im afraid i have no one answer to that,,, it is usually always a collective spectrum of reasons from different social classes,,, politically jamaica has been very unstable in recent years, its economy flagging and its social fibre decemated by coruption etc,,, as most things though im sure money has something to do with it

  • @alexandertory you're not explaining why is there crime though

  • @1000gohead jamaica has been independent for 50 years! the Queen was merely ceremonial. she only visited the place 6 times since 1952... so the crime is a result of the last 50 years as previously there was a good social care system and crime was relatively low in comparison to what it is now

  • @alexandertory Stemming from what though? If it's gun related crimes or anything dealing with money, it's not because of Jamaicans. I think Jamaica would be fine independent, Look at Fiji.

  • @alexandertory not all of jamaica is filled of crime and violence (well mostly kingston), but jamaica's proverty is very low compared to the rich and middle class jamaicans, we are better independent than when we were under GB. and no drugs did not help.
