On The QMx Track at the 2009 Creation Entertainment Serenity L.A. Con, we were treated to a rare joint appearance of Jane Espenson and Tim Minear, who talked about the writing process and helping create genre television's most enduring stories. Jane Espenson has written for shows including Ellen, Gilmore Girls, The O.C, Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse, among many others. She is especially proud of her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and on Battlestar Galactica, where she wrote episodes, co-wrote the Emmy-nominated webisodes, and wrote and produced the BSG TV movie "The Plan." Jane is currently Executive Producer of "Caprica," the Battlestar prequel series set to premiere on Syfy in January of 2010. Tim Minear is well known among television genre fans for his work on such shows as Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The X-Files and Strange World. A frequent partner with Joss Whedon, Minear spent four seasons as writer/director/executive producer on the Buffy The Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel before executive-producing another Whedon series, cult favorite Firefly. After serving as a consulting producer and director during the first season of DOLLHOUSE, Minear now serves as an executive producer and director during the series sophomore season. Minears association with 20th Century Fox Television and FOX includes executive-producing the quirky comedy/drama Wonderfalls, the noir procedural The Inside and the cross country mystery/adventure Drive. Additionally Minear served as a consulting producer on the dramas Standoff and K-Ville. Currently Minear is developing a post-911 re-imagining of the 1989 movie Alien Nation for SyFy channel.

Thanks for this video. Like Anday, I feel like this is an incredible outlet for writing after seeing these two talk. I've always loved their writing (The Dollhouse episode Minear mentions in the first or second part was brilliant). Now I can't stop thinking about getting into the field and coming up with spec ideas

I'm fairly sure that if Tim and Jane spoke all day long, I would listen with the utmost level of fascination. They did an incredible job here of conveying what it means to be a television writer, and even more so, they made it friendly and appealing. Joss is an inspiring writer, but these two have basically dragged my interests into the industry.
