I went out to tap some maple sap for the sole intention of learning how the process works for a survival situation. I find it unbelievable that the Natives had the patience to carve out a log, pour sap in and place hot stones in to evaporate the water. This would be their only source of sugar for the entire year(minus natural honey deposits and wild fruits). I have tapped more since this video with more modern equipment and have collected a lot more sap. I will also have a follow up video of birch tapping in a few weeks once they start to run. You DON'T have to have a Sugar Maple to get maple syrup!! It just takes a bit more but ANYBODY can do it.
