I've never used mine with charcoal, just let the layer of lava rock on the grate pretend that it's charcoal, but when my burner croaked about 15 years ago, I made what seems to be a good move. Went to Home Depot and got a heavy duty *stainless steel* replacement. It was $25 back then, and 10 years later, it's only a little bit tarnished, and otherwise solid as the day it was new.

@mageac I just wash it with a hose pipe. It has air hole in the bottom that it drains through
