During the Soviet era, the people of Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan were used as human guinea pigs in the testing of nuclear weapons. Today they live with the consequences. Whilst sheep graze in radioactive bomb craters, many in the population believe that the testing is the reason why one in twenty children are born with birth defects. Dr Toleukhan Nurmagambetov, the boss of the city's maternity clinic, wants to introduce a genetic passport which will prevent those with suspect genes from giving birth.

Bibigul -- a local woman from the test-site -- is pregnant and her "defected and frightful" face arouses the suspicion of local medical staff. Nurmagambetov labels her a genetic failure. He implores Bibigul to get tested and abort the child who he fears will be born disabled, but Bibigul refuses to give up her dream of becoming a mother.

I have never seen such terrible videos, however i live in Kazakhstan! It's scary to think, to what will lead NUCLEAR war! It's only consequence of experiments in military poligons,but real nuclear war will be much horrible than this examples. I think it would be better to help them,who suffer from this worst kind of disease. I wish them health, to be strong and fight for better life. And we musn't repeat this kind of big mistakes never!

Powerful and shocking. This brought me to tears. I'm so happy for Bibigul for standing up for herself. Our fragilities are what makes human, and to attempt to deny anyone their right to exist as we do on our black earth. And to carry on their bloodlines is barbaric. We have as much right as anyone else to have a damn baby.

of course a child has all the rights to be born and be goven a chance to live no matter how genetically damaged, but anyway ... really scary. (I live near Tokyo, approximetely 250km away from the nuclear plant)

& the guy claiming radiation didn't cause the problems?! What a lie.

The ones that were affected also endured the blasts more directly - that means as children, when they are still growing to adulthood - requiring gene transcriptions, they got hit with so many radioactive particles it affected many cells nucleus' - mutating the genes, hence why they went on to code wrongly as they got older.

It's very obviously damage caused by radiation and it's sick people even do tests like that anywhere.

I'm shocked to hear in this (one of many things) that scientists don't consider that genes transfer coding that is affected by radiation?! Do I have that right? Were the subtitles wrong? If your genes are altered by things like radioactive particles (which can hit and knock out codons - is how it causes cancer etc) then those genes may code wrongly both for you subsequently, and for any children you have (applies to males too).

Thanks to Antony Butts for making this movie. I too hope that people in charge will change something about the situation, moved by the movie, but seriously doubt it.
