This one rocked up to number 8 in the US. The band had much more success overall in the UK but this song only made it to number 30 there. This song was to The Clash as Mr. Roboto was to Styx! The beginning of the end of the band, the jumping of the shark. The Clash broke up in 1985. This one had everyone guessing. Yes I'll admit for a short time I thought they were saying 'Rock the Cash Bar'. When I found out it was Casbah I was even more clueless. Let's start there. What is a Casbah? Casbah (also spelled "Qasbah" or "Kasbah") refers to walled areas in many North African towns in Algiers. Seem like a good place to rock if you ask me. Joe Strummer wrote the lyrics about an Arab ruler (the Shariff) who hates music, but is defied by the citizens and even his own air force. It tells the story about how when the Shereef is away, the temple band and everyone rocks. Kind of strange. So how did Strummer get inspired to write this? The band's manager Bernie Rhodes, after hearing them record an inordinately long track for the album, asked them facetiously "does everything have to be as long as this rāga?" (referring to the Indian musical style known for its length and complexity). Joe Strummer later wrote the opening lines to the song: "The King told the boogie-men 'you have to let that rāga drop'". The rest of the lyrics soon followed" The idea for the overall concept was conceived when Strummer saw a news report of Iranians who were flogged for owning Disco albums.
