In 1977 Bobby Bird attempted to literally buy a friend when he adopted a chimpanzee from a South American zoo. Things did not work out as he'd planned.

I just saw this on Wolphin: No. 5, a collection of Indie movies and documentaries. "Chonto" along with "Death to the Tinman" and "Madame Tulti-Pulti" were the best three on this volume of Wolphin.

I saw this a while ago as a short film free with a magazine, and have watched it several times since here on the 'tubes. Probably my favourite short film I've ever seen, so strange, so funny and so weirdly touching.
